electrolytes!
I started freestyle swimming last year - over some months I ramped up to about 1100m each session. I love it... its great cardio and muscle training, takes a ton of mental focus, and most importantly: I don’t have to be drenched in sweat. The problem is, you really don't realize how much you're sweating - how much water you're losing. A couple months ago, after a particularly heavy day, I felt exactly like being hung-over. Not only that, but I had been getting terrible foot cramps. All signs of dehydration and loss of electrolytes. Water wasn't enough, so I started making my own electrolyte mix, its very cheap and very clean.
One month supply of electrolyte powder:
- 75g sodium chloride - I use pink himalayan salt from Costco, i've heard it contains extra trace minerals.
- 11.5g potassium chloride - I tested it against my baseline tap water and found no difference in lead or other metals.
- 11.7g magnesium malate - same source, and also no difference over my baseline tap water.
I weigh it out every month, and put .5 teaspoons in 3L of water each day. Very easy, very cheap.
Not exactly a recipe I know, but very good to have around!
